Running Dogs

Recommended Posts

I know this may cause arguments and i appologuise before hand but i have to settle my mind.

Ive been lamping rabbits for some time and have used mainly small whippet type dogs ive also used these type dogs in the day, bushing or ferreting and with good success.

Now im moving on to lamping foxes as well as rabbits so i bought a Beddy x Grayhound

from a very experienced hunter, whos dogs can be guarenteed.

I have no experience with Bull xs but my mate has one and is working well on rabbits, has beed doubled up on charlie and is now ready for his first solo.

I was out with him the other day when i bolted a rabbit he had the two dogs and slipped them both at the same time, my lurcher skinned his dog to catch the rabbit like a ferrari would a ford.

The thing is i dont now wether i made the right choise?

If i was lamping mainley rabbits and occasional foxes then lurcher ?

If it was the other way around then Bull X ?

Whats your choise ?

my personal preference is the Lurcher every time.

I know Bull cross lads swear by them ,but they are heavy and slow as you clearly illustrated.

And I could never trust a Bull cross I would always have the nagging doubt that it would one day snap and kill some ones dog or something it shouldn't be chasing.

Bedlingtons are not geniuses but at least they are not unstable mad dogs so dangerous they had to be band.

Not to mention if some body points out to the authorities you have a bull cross they will put your dog down just for being a bull cross.

Which would be a pain having to start with a pup and training all again not to mention very distressing.

That is if you are a genuine dog lover.

personally I think Bull blood is total over kill for most hunting I know they can ,but any cross of a decent size can kill a little scrawny fox if brought on the right way ,admittedly some will never take to it.

My self I know fox taste shit and prefer to eat rabbit and wood pigeon.

Hi Blackbob, your post was about "lurchers" Vs "bull x s' " (?) , my point is, get the "dog" you think will be suitable for the work you expect. Train it to the best of your ability and hope for the best, don't try to start a " my type is better than your type" argument, it's gone on ad nauseum many times before and gets nowhere.

Cheers.

everybodies entitled to there opinion and what choice of breed they want and i respect that, but to say bull Xs are heavy and slow isnt exactly true, i agree some 1st crosses might be, as regards to rabbiting, but ive got a 3/8 bull 5/8 greyhound bitch thats 22inch and she,s f@@king dynamite on rabbits and hares and has the fire to tackle the nastiest charlie. but in the picture you,ve got a good solid bull X running against a racy looking beddy X, so its obvious which dos gonna get there 1st. what i lke about bull Xs is they will give 110% even when the chips are down and every one ive seen are very people friendly :friends:

just my opinion

You cant judge two totally different types of lurcher on the chase of one bunny :11:

I like the look of the bull cross I have to say, looks racy enough from the picture. It all comes down to what you want the dog to do. Why not go out with your mate some more and see if the bull x really comes into its own as the night goes on, the stamina of some of these bull crosses can be pretty admirable. Horses for courses and all that :good:

Bang on, ive been out with these dogs many a night and the stamina on the bull x when rabbiting on the lamp is " pretty admirable " and he takes lots of rabbits.

As they are both young dogs Beddy x 11mths and 27", Bull x 18mts and 25"

i am looking forward to working these dogs alot togeather. But it just seems that alot of people have Bull in their lurchers for foxes.

I understand the reasons for this, just curious as to wether or not i should have opted for this.

i've owned both bull cross and bedlington cross that could kill foxes and rabbits, the bedlington was one of the best dogs i've owned as an allrounder but it was'nt in the same league as the bull crosses when it came to foxes or deer even.

now all my lurchers have bull in them as there imo the best type of lurcher for my job.

and if i decide to have a night on the rabbits i know i can knock a good few out without any problems.

these rabbits were taken on the lamp with my dog billy a second generation half cross which weighs just under 80 lb.

p.s the bull cross in the above pic does'nt look at all in running condition to me he looks like he's been getting plenty of grub and little exercise but he looks like my type of dog, get him fit and you'll notice a lot of difference in him.

bull crosses need plenty of exercise and work to get the best out of them. ;)

Sorry [bANNED TEXT] pic dose him no favours, hes very fit out almost every day and even follows us when we are out on the horse. I was quite supprised when i saw the photo, but he did have an infection on his foot which laid him up for a week, not long before this photo was taken.

cheers
